Why Asbestos Removal Courses Matter

Asbestos-containing materials remain present in a huge number of New Zealand’s commercial buildings, schools, and government facilities constructed before the year 2000. Proper training is essential and serves as a critical line of defence for your workforce:

Legal Compliance

Under the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016, PCBUs (Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking) have a legal duty to ensure that any worker who may encounter asbestos has received appropriate training.

Without proper asbestos removal course certification, organisations risk enforcement action from WorkSafe NZ, project shutdowns, and significant financial penalties.

Workforce Safety

An accredited asbestos awareness training course equips teams with the knowledge to identify asbestos-containing materials, understand exposure risks, and follow safe work procedures.

For construction crews, maintenance staff, and facility managers working in ageing buildings, this training directly reduces the likelihood of harmful fibre exposure.

Protecting Your Projects

Untrained personnel on site can lead to costly project delays, contamination incidents, and reputational damage, particularly on high-profile education or government contracts.

Completing an asbestos removal course before work begins keeps your project on track and your organisation’s record clean.

Frequently asked questions

  • Any worker who could encounter asbestos-containing materials during their role requires training. This includes construction and demolition workers, maintenance staff, building managers, and contractors (tradies, electricians, plumbers, builders) working on older commercial buildings. Education sector facility teams and government property managers also fall within scope.

  • An asbestos awareness course is designed for workers who may encounter asbestos but will not physically remove it. This covers identification, risks, and safe work procedures.

An asbestos removal course provides the additional practical and regulatory training required for workers who will handle, encapsulate, or remove asbestos-containing materials. Your organisation may need both, depending on the scope of work your teams undertake.

  • Course duration depends on the level of training. A standard online asbestos awareness training module can typically be completed within a few hours, while in-person asbestos removal courses may run from one to several days.
